SPECIALTY COURSES

BUSINESS COURSE

Picture of Business ClassA more complete business course cannot be found at any other decorative art school.  This course will give you the tools and knowledge to become established and compete in the decorative art industry.  It is given within each faux finish workshop in addition to being offered separately.

This Business Course is the only course designed and taught by a former attorney and judge, accountant, tax consultant, CPA, and master decorative artists. After attending our faux finish workshop, a professor at a nationally known university told us that this business course is better than what they teach at the university!

  • Jim Galeotti has over 30 years experience as a lawyer, judge, and court administrator. He teaches the legal and tax aspects of the business course.

  • Susan (Sher) Galeotti has over 28 years experience as an artist operating a decorative arts business, 8 years teaching the decorative arts, and 7 years as an accountant for a large corporation.

  • Sherree Andersen apprenticed under and then partnered with Susan (Sher) Galeotti in the decorative arts business for over 15 years.

  • Additionally, the services of a CPA and tax accountant have been procured to assure that you receive the very best start at operating your own decorative arts business.

A successful artist must learn the basic skills necessary to succeed in the field of decorative art. The best way is to take classes from a master of that profession. Then, periodically, go on to broaden their offerings by improving their talents and learning new skills so they may become extraordinarily proficient in their business.

One difference between success and failure is the amount of education and preparation an artist is willing to put into their business. In every profession, there is a need to be versed in the business component. What do you charge? What are your legal requirements? What sales tools are needed? A good mechanic, a successful doctor, or a skilled lawyer knows these things before they enter into their business.

The following are topics explained in the Business Course:

  • How to set up a business

  • License and government regulations

  • Develop a marketing plan - proven & successful, methods to market yourself and your business

  • Advertising - good and bad samples, how and where to advertise most effectively, including a sample ad

  • Terms and phrases used in the decorative art business to help you sell yourself in an ad

  • A workable format for your business cards and print ads.

  • Tax ramifications of operating your own business (prepared by tax accountant)

  • Telephone procedures when the client calls

  • Consultation procedures - How to handle a consultation and bring about a sale

  • How to estimate with profit and fairness - specific pricing methods to price your art to sell

  • Bid - how to estimate and present a bid or proposal, including a bid form

  • How to close the deal

  • Personal Services Contract with customer (form designed by an attorney)

  • Presenting the contract and getting paid

  • Independent Contractor Contract with sub-contractors (form designed by an attorney and tax CPA)

  • Preparing sample boards and presenting sample boards to ensure profit

  • Sample invoice (form designed by artist in decorative arts business)

  • Artist’s checklist to help you remember the necessary tools and equipment for the job.

  • Helpful publications

  • Follow-up procedures

The primary reason that Faux Painting School is offering this business package for decorative artists is to assure that you are armed for success.  Many artists are often very weak in the business of their art. It is very important that the decorative art industry maintain a high standard of excellence. When standards are lowered or eliminated, the entire industry suffers. After learning and honing their talents and skills, the artist must learn how to market and price their art within this standard.

There is a growing demand for high-quality decorative art. If the artist is willing to invest time, education, and hard work, soon this growing market will rush to their door. Learning the business of decorative art is what separates the amateurs from the professionals.

Painted Furniture and Cabinet Finishing
2 Days

Are you looking for an outlet for your creative imagination? Why not create furniture with an attitude. This comprehensive furniture course will teach you to create beautiful, functional works of art. Learn to imitate old world antiques on your garage sale fixer upper, and design custom pieces using tried and true methods. We will unravel the tricks to making your own custom pieces from unfinished furniture.

We cover preparation of wood and other materials. You will learn design, and refinishing, then create a functional object. Learn the colors that go with different techniques, which styles exemplify different periods or cultures, and the overall process of converting an undesirable piece of junk furniture into a sale-maker.

Students will create samples of each technique on wood boards or polystyrene boards. Distressed wood, crackle, handmade stonewashed stains, metallic waxes, ever popular animal designs, woodgraining, stenciling, imbedded designs, and much more will be created on the appropriate surface. There will be emphasis on finishing cabinets. Decorative artists who can finish cabinets are in great demand. These designs will make a beautiful addition to your portfolio.

Hand painted furniture is sold in many specialty boutiques. It brings high prices and is in demand throughout the United States. It is time for you to be a part of this financially and personally rewarding home based business.

Prerequisite: none Cost: $450
