The student will learn all of the latest techniques as well as traditional techniques, such as glazing, metallic wax, frottage, marbling, mastering the art of blending and veining, creating depth with color, layering, texturing, Venetian plaster, and distressing.

This comprehensive, five day faux painting class, is for the serious, career minded artist. The course will give you the tools and knowledge to get started as a decorative painter using proven faux painting techniques. The business side of faux finishing will be covered in detail as discussed below. The latest in faux finish tools will be taught. At this faux finish school, we do not endorse any particular line of products, but teach you about the different products on the market.

Since the teachers are also working faux finish artists, they are in tune with the colors, styles and techniques that are popular today. The paint colors used in class are the popular colors du jour. At the same time, the student will experiment with the extensive array of colors in waxes, tints, pigments, and paints available in the class room.

Metallic Wax - Raku Finish

Faux Stone FireplaceFAUX FINISHING & OLD WORLD FINISHES
A few of the samples students produce are embossed leather, metallic wax, Tuscany textures, Corinthian leather, hand made wallcoverings, and any technique that is currently popular. Now, you can reproduce those distressed pieces of furniture that sell for so much in the shops and walls that resemble old European villas. The student will create suede effects, an old world plaster effect, and a faux limestone finish, providing a tactile quality to a creation that begs to be touched. Another old world creation includes a textured fresco wall with exposed bricks.

MARBLE AND STONE
Faux Marble ColumnsWe teach the latest and simplest techniques for creating stone and marble. These techniques can be used on walls, furniture, columns, floors, and more. The art of painting grout around stone is taught. This is the section of the course where you will master the art of blending, veining, shading, and highlighting.

Picture of Al Fresco Venetian PlasterVENETIAN PLASTER
Veneciano is the most asked for Venetian plaster today. You will create two Veneciano boards. The colors will be your choice with the help of the color theory course. Being able to offer your clients Venetian plaster will offer an advantage over most faux finishers today.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM
This apprenticeship program will help the student grasps all the tricks of the trade by creating the more elaborate finishes on large surfaces. For instance, the student artist will have the opportunity to apply a learned technique on a full wall with the assistance of the teacher. Or, a column will be finished with a marble technique. You will learn to maneuver corners and ceilings, eliminate the start and stop lines, and to adjust for large surfaces.

COLOR MATCHING AND THEORY
A basic understanding of what colors to match with other colors and why will be explored in this course. You will mix paints, waxes, and many other mediums to better understand how each medium works on a particular surface. The temperature of colors, the value of colors, and understanding how those two elements work in matching colors can help you confidently design with color. This class will help you get the colors right the first time.

BUSINESS OF DECORATIVE PAINTING
The business course will give you the tools and knowledge to get started as a decorative painter. The business side of faux finishing will be covered in detail, including filing taxes, samples of bids, a contract between the artist and the client that was drawn up by an attorney and a contract for any subcontractor’s of the artist that was drawn up by an attorney and a tax accountant, how to bid, and how to market your art with proven techniques.

Good and bad advertising will be discussed and advertising samples are available. Several ways to break down your art and price it in a manner that will keep you within the market and still make a profit will be covered in detail.

Accelerated Faux Finish Course  3 Days
Artists: Susan Galeotti & Sherree Andersen

Picture of South Beach Coral Faux Finish Faux Painting School is offering a new three-day Accelerated Faux Finish Course designed especially for the individual who does not have 5 to 7 days of freedom from home or business responsibilities. Each class is a semi-private class with a maximum of two students. The Accelerated Faux Finish Course means individual attention and working at your own speed instead of the speed of the whole class. Training 8 people at a time, as in the Comprehensive Faux Finish Course, takes much more time than training two people. In this course, you will finish faster with the same amount of material as in the Comprehensive Faux Finish Course.

The student can schedule three days of private sessions at their own convenience and work the hours they choose or come to the scheduled sessions listed on the web site. Even weekends are an option. In the similar course, Comprehensive Faux Finish Class, students will finish 12 to 14 sample boards for their portfolio. The student of the Accelerated Faux Finish Course will do the same amount of sample boards, and probably more because there are not as many students who need attention.

What are some other advantages of taking a private Accelerated Course? You will reduce by half your time away from home or business. It will cost you less for lodging and food. You get to pick the techniques that you want instead of a set curriculum.  This three-day course includes the business course and color theory. The student can choose the samples and techniques they wish to learn or the techniques they believe will be popular in their community.

Advanced Master Faux Finish Course - 3 Days

Artist: Susan Galeotti

Picture of Faux Coral Stone The discriminating client is seeking artists who can accomplish high-end, one-of-a-kind decorative finishes. Do you have such finishes in your portfolio? This Master Faux Finish course is filled with the newest, most elegant, and most sought after techniques available today in the United States. Three days of finished design work that is intend to broaden the scope of the working faux finish professional by enhancing the portfolio and educating the professional on the latest techniques, tools, and products. This course is crucial for the artist who wishes to remain on the cutting edge of the faux finish business.

Picture of Travertine Marble MARBLE - The artist who can duplicate different types of marble and granite are in high demand. We will be creating diagonal marbles, veined marbles, and Breche marbles. A seven layer painted marble is beautiful but who pays for it? By the time you are finished, they could have had the real marble for less money. You will be taught how to do those marbles using products that can create the deep, many layered marble look without the time, lots of product, and expense. The marbles sell on larger surfaces as well as furniture.

Picture of Cobblestone VENETIAN PLASTER AND LAYERED TEXTURES - Decorative texture finishes are sweeping this country. This class will teach you how to combine different textured products with metallic products to enhance the drama and elegance associated with the trends of today. We will be using pigments, one-of-a-kind stencils, European lustre products, Venetian plaster with European patterns, and metallic waxes and paints.

COLOR MATCHING AND THEORY - a basic understanding of what colors to match with other colors and why will be explored in this section of the course. You will mix paints, waxes, and many other mediums to better understand how each medium works on a particular surface. The temperature of colors, the value of colors, and understanding how those two elements work in matching colors can help you confidently designing with color. This class will help you get the color right the first time.

Experience has taught us that working on large surfaces gives the student a better grasp of the technique. It also embeds itself into the memory. Each artist will work on a large 4 foot board. At the end of class if the board is too large for shipping, we will cut it into four smaller samples.

The artist will leave the class with a manual containing detailed instructions of the techniques and written information on the parameters of each product. A color theory workbook and color wheel that the artist will refer to on a daily basis is also included in this course. This workshop is a must in stimulating the artist to create new finishes and increasing the degree of professional success.

This course will cover the following techniques:

  • Diagonal Marble

  • Carrara or a Breche Marble

  • Travertine Marble

  • MarmoLustre Marble

  • Layered MarmoLustre on texture

  • Fiorentino Suede (Antique Suede)

  • Venetian Plaster & Texture
